 Update:

As many people are experiencing, the current COVID-19 pandemic has changed much about our lives. I am currently unable to physically access this collection to be able to continue my archival and data entry. For the time being, I have used crude placeholder photos of the garments I was able to collect data on last winter. Although not elegantly, all garments pre 1930 are currently accounted for and shown on this site! I hope to soon be back on campus and able to complete this database and archival work. Stay safe and stay tuned!

Collection History and our mission:

The theatre department possesses a collection of approximately 300 garments and accessories ranging in age from the 1860s to the 1950s. These specific garments have been donated or found in their stock over the past many years. They have been set aside from our overall working collection at the discretion of the costume shop staff and faculty due to their historical significance or lack of strength for use in production. These articles of costume and dress have served as an incredible working resource in overall period style trends and historical garment construction to the students and faculty of this department for the past several decades. Unfortunately, due to the constant growth of this collection, storage space and archival resources have become slim. This has prevented the proper storage and maintenance of these garments, forcing them to be stored in ways that are detrimental to their existence. As my education here comes to a close, I have decided to create an online database and cataloging system to inventory and document this collection. I have also tested numerous methods of archival and written a proposal to the university in order to accompany this resource in order to hopefully find the necessary funding to properly archive and store this collection. I hope this resource I have created serves as a tool in order to better serve the students, staff, and faculty of this university as well as others interested in the research of historic dress and costume.
